Looking for some topics to talk about with locals? Well the first one is wind. Yes, Kiwis looove to talk about wind! If you think ‘nah that’s quite boring’ or you just figured out you know nothing about meteorology than keep on reading! We put together 11 funny facts about our beautiful country. And wind is not one of them 😉

1. More people live in Auckland..

than on the whole South Island! 1.4 million in the city compared to 1.03 million on the South Island. 

2. 128 km..

is the longest distance to reach the ocean. No matter where you are..

3. The clearest water in the world..

is found at Blue Lake which is located in Nelson Lakes National Park. According to the NIWA research results, visibility in the lake is up to 80 metres – meaning the water is considered almost as “optically clear” as distilled water.

4. 95% percent of NZ's population...

are animals 😉 New Zealand is home to about 30 million sheep and 10 million beef cattle. 

5. The Kiwi Bird..

is the logo of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. What’s so funny about this? The Kiwi can not fly!

6. New Zealand has it's on wizard!

In 1982, New Zealand appointed an official ‘Wizard of Christchurch’. Yep, New Zealand is still the only country to have a government-appointed  wizard. His duties include casting out evil spirits, cheering up the population and to put us on top of the world, both physically and metaphysically. Don’t believe us? Come to Christchurch and see him!

7. At Gisborne's airport..

train tracks are running across the middle of the runway. It’s not uncommon for trains and planes to have to give-way to each other.

8. Kiwis are rolling candy..

down the steepest residential street in the world! Baldwin Street in Dunedin, with a gradient of 1 in 2.86 is home to the  Jaffa Race where people can take part in rolling a Jaffa Lolly (round sweet) down the hill. Check it out, you will not be disappointed!

9. Kiwis are living in the future!

New Zealand is the first country in the world to see a new day. Our East Cape is situated just under 500km from the international dateline, meaning we are living in the future!

10. The longest place name in the world is..

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu. Yes, that is a word and yes, this place exists in New Zealand on the North Island!

It translates roughly as “The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his kōauau (flute) to his loved one”.

11. Free the Boobs!

Ever heard of ‘Bradona’?

It began around 1999, when four bras mysteriously appeared overnight on a fence along the Cardrona Valley Road.

Nowadays hundreds of colorful bras of all shapes and sizes are found on the fence, providing a good photo opportunity along the picturesque road.

If you’re wearing your best bra on the day you visit, you can even post them to Spaans’ business address and she’ll be happy to hang them out for you 🙂
