Christchurch Farmers Market is open every Saturday 9am – 1pm. Since 2013, all year round.
Having started in 2003, the Christchurch Farmers market is the largest Saturday Farmers’ Market in town created from a desire to easily serve local, seasonal ingredients and produce to the people of Christchurch. The market is located in the beautiful and historic grounds of Riccarton House and Bush.
Haven’t been there yet? Here is why it is worth to stop by when you around the area:
A wide variety of stalls and products!
The market has grown from 10 stalls to now over 80 stalls! The products range from fresh produce, which can be found in Fruit & Veggie, Meat & Fish as well as Winter and Summer (incl. Spring and Autumn) seasonal produce and food, to baking goods, wines and beer, as well as sweets and other produce, e.g. preserved foods and, flowers and puppy biscuits as well as many ready-to-eat selections. Everyone will be able to stop their cravings at one of the many stalls.
With the best of Canterbury’s produce on offer, Hummingbird coffee and live music, the market is a must-see for tourists and a “must-go-every-week” for locals. The market is widely acclaimed for both the quality and diversity of its fresh farm products, and artisan and prepared foods. It is renowned throughout the country as one of the top farmers markets to visit. The market’s rule is that the actual stallholders are the producers themselves – people who grow, rear or bake the food that they sell. Ask questions, explore their knowledge, get recipe ideas and find out what each stall holder has to offer. Good conversations, good food paired with meeting locals, friends and family. That’s how a market should be!
The market is set on the doorstep site of the stunning Heritage One listed Riccarton House, former home to the founding family of Canterbury, the Deans Family. Located directly on the Avon river and a protected native bush it is a wonderful place to visit and support local producers. The Riccarton House is closed on Saturdays (due to the market) but can be visited on other days. The venue can also be booked for Private Events and Weddings. The caterers are one of the founders of the market itself so if you are looking for wholesome seasonal, fresh food set in a one of a kind venue get in contact with them.
...so is it the best farmers market in New Zealand?
To answer the questions: Well, we clearly haven’t been visiting every single farmers market in NZ… But we have been at a many, both on the North and South Island. And we have to admit, the Riccarton Bush market is really nice. This may also be because we truly love this city. So for us, it is by far the best market in the country!
Parking is available on the surrounding streets and also in Boys High School. Should you be on a nice campsite it is always a good idea to leave the van and take a bus into the city as parking can get difficult during peak times.
Please bring your own bags to help reduce waste. Christchurch’s Farmers Market also offers you a nice sturdy bag for 8NZ$, available at the info stall.
